Calw
Give Calw one night, or a half-day stop between Pforzheim and Horb: the old town is 90 minutes on foot, the rest is Hirsau and the Hesse trail.
Calw is a small Nagold valley town on the eastern edge of the Black Forest, built almost entirely of timber after a 1692 fire, and the birthplace of Hermann Hesse. The compact centre takes half a day; the abbey ruins at Hirsau and the 5 km Hesse trail add the other half. Most travellers pass through on the Nagold Valley Railway between Pforzheim and Horb, or sleep one night to use the KONUS guest card for free regional transport.

Get around
Walk. The centre is compact but cobbled and steep in places. Regional trains run on the Nagold Valley Railway (Pforzheim about 25 min, Horb about 45 min) and the Hermann-Hesse-Bahn links to the Stuttgart S-Bahn network via Weil der Stadt; buses connect the districts from the ZOB beside the station. Overnight guests in a registered hotel or guesthouse get the KONUS guest card for free regional buses and trains across the Black Forest region. Drivers should use the Parkhaus am Markt or Parkhaus Lederstraße; street parking in the alleys is largely residents-only.
