Calgary sits where the prairies meet the foothills, an hour from Banff and the main gateway to the Rockies. Downtown is compact and walkable, the river paths run for hundreds of kilometres, and the food and bar scene on 17th Avenue and in Kensington is the real draw. Most travellers use it as a two-night base before or after the mountains, or stretch to three for the Stampede.

Get around
Downtown is walkable and the CTrain light rail is free within the downtown core. Buy a day pass for longer trips; buses and the CTrain share the same fare. A car is only worth it for day trips to the mountains or outlying sights.
