Caledonia
Caledonia, Nova Scotia
Go only as a one-night base for Kejimkujik: no public transport, no town centre to walk, and a car is required for every sight.
Caledonia is a village of about 1,500 on Highway 8, the Keji Scenic Drive, roughly 45 minutes north of Liverpool and an hour from Annapolis Royal. It has a museum, a fairground, a couple of inns and the western gateways to Kejimkujik National Park. Almost nobody comes here for the village itself: they come for the park, the lakes and the logging-and-gold history of North Queens, and they need a car to do it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport and no taxi rank: without a car you are stuck.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads around the park.
- Moose and deer on Highway 8 at dawn and dusk.
- Many businesses run seasonal hours; call before you drive out.
Rural and quiet; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dawn and dusk, unpaved roads), patchy phone signal and cold water in the lakes. Tell someone your route before heading into the park backcountry.
