Caldicot is a small Monmouthshire town between Newport and Chepstow, with a complete castle in a free country park, an underground grotto at Dewstow and the Roman town of Venta Silurum at Caerwent a short drive away. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the Cardiff–Chepstow line rather than a base; two nights is enough to add the Levels walks and the Severn Tunnel works at Sudbrook.

Get around

The town centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. Caldicot station sits on the Newport–Gloucester line; Severn Tunnel Junction, about a mile away in Rogiet, has the faster services to Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and London Paddington. The X73 bus links Newport and Chepstow. A car makes Dewstow, Caerwent and Sudbrook much easier.

  • Rogiet has no shops or cafés by the station; buy food and water in Caldicot first.
  • Some pubs in town have closed; check opening hours before walking out to one.

A quiet town and one of the safer parts of Wales; the real issues are unlit lanes and muddy, tidal ground on the Levels, and a thin late-evening train service.
