Calabasas
Skip as a base unless you have a car and a reason: one half-day for the Leonis Adobe and the Commons, or a sleep stop on US 101 between LA and the Conejo Valley.
Calabasas is a suburban city of about 23,000 at the southwest corner of the San Fernando Valley, in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. It has one real sight (the Leonis Adobe), one shopping-and-eating stop (the Commons) and two hotels. Almost everything here needs a car: the city sits on the Ventura Freeway (US 101), about 30 miles northwest of Downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles west of Burbank. Treat it as a stop on a Valley or Malibu day, not a destination trip.

Get around
A car is the practical way to move here: the city spreads along US 101 and the hills, and sidewalks are patchy outside the Commons. Rideshare works for short hops but wait times can stretch at night. Metro bus routes run along the freeway corridor; check current schedules before relying on them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- US 101 through Calabasas is a commuter corridor: avoid 7–10am and 3–7pm if you are driving through.
- Summer heat inland can pass 35°C; carry water on any foothills walk.
- Foothill roads into the Santa Monica Mountains are narrow and have few turnouts; do not stop in the lane.
- Wildfire season runs roughly Jun–Nov: check local alerts before hiking or driving into the hills.
A low-crime suburban city; the real risks are freeway traffic, summer heat on foothill walks and wildfire-season closures in the Santa Monica Mountains. Ask about posted prices before sitting down anywhere that does not show them.
