East, Cairo: neighborhood guide

East Cairo is not one district but a chain of planned communities built east of the historic centre: Heliopolis (Masr el-Gedida), Nasr City and New Cairo. Heliopolis is the oldest, laid out from 1905–07 by the Belgian Baron Empain, with a tram line that once linked it to central Cairo; the tram was removed in 2015. Its old core, Korba, keeps Andalusian-style buildings, churches and cultural centres from the cosmopolitan years of the early 20th century.

Nasr City was built from the 1960s as a would-be new capital that never developed as planned. It is now a dense, mixed neighbourhood and a shopping and business centre with several malls. New Cairo, started in 2000, spreads across the far east with gated compounds, international schools, malls and hotels; it is planned for a much larger population than it holds today.

Cairo International Airport sits just east of Heliopolis, which is the single fact that shapes most travellers' decisions here. The area is car-dependent, traffic jams are common, and the Ring Road is usually the fastest way in or out.

No, if this is your first visit and you are here for the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Those sit on the west and central-east side of the city, and the cross-town trip from Heliopolis or New Cairo can take 30–60 minutes each way, longer at peak times. Most first-timers are better off in Downtown, Giza or Gezira, and should treat East Cairo as an airport-night option.

A workable compromise is two bases: one or two nights in East Cairo at the start or end of the trip, and the sightseeing nights on the other side of the city.

Metro Line 3 runs between central Cairo and Heliopolis, with stops including Koleyet El Banat near the Baron Empain Palace, and ends at Adly Mansour, where you can connect to commuter rail towards the New Administrative Capital and regional services (check timetables and opening). A monorail and a high-speed rail station for the east were planned; confirm what is running before you rely on either (check).

Inside the area, expect to use cars. Distances between Heliopolis, Nasr City and New Cairo are long, and pavements are uneven or missing in places. The Ring Road is the usual route between them.
