Bytom
One half-day for the Rynek and Upper Silesian Museum, then move on: Bytom is a Katowice day trip, not a base.
Bytom is an old Silesian mining and steel town 7 km northwest of Katowice, first documented in 1136 and industrialised from the 19th century. Its centre is small and slabby rather than pretty, but the Upper Silesian Museum, the market square and the Szombierki industrial relics give it a real half-day. Most travellers sleep in Katowice and ride in on the frequent M3 bus or the 30-minute train.

Get around
ZTM runs the whole Silesian metropolis: buy a time ticket and validate it on board. Bus M3 links Katowice via Chorzów to Bytom every 15 min daytime and hourly overnight, about 30 min. Trains from Katowice take about 30 min via Chorzów and continue to Tarnowskie Góry. The centre itself is walkable; trams run along Piekarska to the cemeteries and Miechowice.

Scams and watch-outs
- Szombierki Power Station is derelict and unsafe: do not enter without an organised tour.
- Kolonia Zgorzelec and Kolonia Bobrek are lived-in, run-down neighbourhoods: visit in daylight, keep cameras low.
- Bytom railway station has been under long renovation, so ticket and facility arrangements can be makeshift.
- Some subsidence lakes at Żabie Doły carry residual pollution: don't swim.
Bytom is a normal working Silesian city and fine by day, but the centre empties at night and some worker districts are rough: stay near the Rynek and station after dark, and don't wander into Szombierki or Kolonia Zgorzelec alone.
