Burra
Give Burra one full day and one night: the mine site and heritage passport fill a day, and it breaks the Adelaide-to-Clare drive.
Burra is a former copper-mining town of about 1,100 people in the Clare Valley region, 166 km north of Adelaide. Its Cornish mine site and stone cottages are on Australia's UNESCO tentative list. Most travellers see it in a day, or sleep one night on the way north.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and start sightseeing early.
- Fuel and food options thin out after 20:00; eat before then.
- Some passport sites are locked and only open with the key: collect it during visitor-centre hours.
- Kangaroos and emus on the A32 at dawn and dusk: slow down.
A small, quiet town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are summer heat, long unlit rural roads at dawn and dusk, and driving distances between towns with no phone signal.
