Burqin is a small county town on the Irtysh River in northern Xinjiang, at the gateway to the Kanas and Hemu scenic areas. Almost nobody comes for the town: it is the last place with banks, a hospital, a bus station and foreigner-friendly hotels before the mountains. Plan one night in town, then two to three nights in Hemu or Kanas. Snow starts in mid-September and the road season runs roughly May to early October.
