Buñol
Go for one day, not a base: see the castle and the gorge, eat a rice lunch, and take the C3 train back to Valencia the same evening.
Buñol is a town of about 9,500 people in La Hoya, the mountain country west of Valencia, and it is the town that throws La Tomatina on the last Wednesday of August. Outside that one hour the town is quiet: a Moorish castle with a small museum, an 18th-century church, a spring-side chapel and walking country on the edge of town. It works as a day trip from Valencia by train, and as a base only if you want a cheap bed in the hills.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable: castle, church, plaza and restaurants are within 10 minutes on foot. A municipal bus loops between the centre and the outlying barrios Monday to Saturday, roughly every 30–60 min. For the gorge and the parks on the edge of town you walk or drive.
