Bungendore
Give Bungendore half a day on the Kings Highway, or one night if you want a truffle hunt or a winery lunch: the village itself is a 15-minute walk.
Bungendore is a small Southern Tablelands town on the Kings Highway, 40 minutes from Canberra and on the Sydney–Canberra rail line. Its colonial grid holds galleries, antiques, bakeries and pubs within a few flat blocks, while the surrounding farms run truffle hunts and cool-climate vineyards. Most travellers see it as a highway stop; it earns a night only if you book an agritourism experience.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Rideshare and taxis are scarce: book a car in advance, especially for a weekend winery lunch.
- Truffle hunts run only in the winter harvest window (roughly June–August) and need booking.
- The former woodworks gallery closed in 2025; the building now opens only for markets and arts-trail events.
- Summer days can pass 35 °C and winter nights drop below freezing: pack for both.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are highway driving at dusk (kangaroos), summer heat, and winter ice on rural roads. Rideshare is unreliable, so plan your ride home before you drink.
