Base here 1–2 nights only if you are driving Inishowen; without a car, treat Buncrana as a Derry day trip (bus 256, 35 min).
Buncrana is a working town of about 7,000 on Lough Swilly, the largest settlement on the Inishowen Peninsula and its shopping centre. The town itself fills an afternoon: a riverside park, a ruined tower keep and a long Main Street of pubs. The reason to sleep here is the peninsula around it — Fort Dunree, the beaches at Lisfannon and the road north to Malin Head. A car changes everything; on buses alone you see the town and little else.

Get around
The town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. For the peninsula you need a car: buses run to Derry, Letterkenny and Carndonagh but not to Fort Dunree or the beaches. Local Link and McGonagle services cover the main routes; check times before you rely on a Sunday.

Scams and watch-outs
- Sunday buses are few: two Derry runs and three Local Link services, so plan Saturday or drive.
- O'Doherty's Keep and Ned's Point Fort are unsafe to enter: view from outside.
- The Swilly Ferry from Rathmullan runs June–Sep only, no booking, and stops in bad weather.
- Mobile signal fades north towards Malin Head: download maps before you drive.
Very safe. The real risks are coastal weather, wet roads on the Inishowen lanes, and walking the shore at high tide: tell someone your route if you go up Slieve Snaght.
