Useful apps for Bulgaria: transport, maps, translation

Set up your phone before you fly, not at the airport. Download the Bulgaria map region in Google Maps so navigation works without data, install your bank's card app and switch on travel notifications, and add an offline translation pack for Bulgarian. Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, so a translation app with camera mode is the fastest way to read signs, menus and bus departure boards.

For transport, the two workhorses are BDZ for trains and a bus timetable site for everything else. Trains are slow but cheap and useful on a few routes; buses cover far more of the country. Buy bus tickets at the station or from the driver, and check the day before, because timetables change with the season. In Sofia, use a licensed taxi app rather than flagging a car on the street; licensed yellow taxis are the standard.

Viber matters more here than in most of Europe. Guesthouse owners, small tour operators and drivers often prefer it to email or SMS, so install it and keep your number reachable. WhatsApp works too, but Viber is the local default.

For money, contactless cards are widely accepted in cities and larger towns, but keep some lev cash for small guesthouses, village shops and taxis. Your bank's app is the practical tool: it lets you unfreeze a card, check a rate or confirm a payment without calling home.

Buy a local prepaid SIM or a travel eSIM if you want data without roaming charges; A1, Yettel and Vivacom sell prepaid SIMs and you need your passport to register. EU and EEA SIMs roam at home prices, so if you already have one, you may not need anything new.

Keep a screenshot of your accommodation address in Cyrillic. Drivers and station staff may not read Latin script, and showing a phone screen is faster than spelling it out.

Do not rely on a single app for buses. Cross-check the timetable site against the bus station's own board or a photo of the departure list, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Charge a power bank. Long bus rides and cold-weather days drain a phone quickly, and you will want maps and tickets working on arrival.

App availability changes. Ride-hailing coverage in Bulgaria is thinner than in Western Europe, and a service that works in Sofia may not work in Plovdiv, Burgas or smaller towns. Check the app in the city you are heading to before you count on it.

Taxi pricing is regulated and metered in Sofia, but the practical protection is booking through an app or a licensed rank rather than accepting a street hail. If a driver quotes a flat price that seems high, take another car.

Some Bulgarian sites and apps are Bulgarian-language only. A browser with automatic translation handles most of it, but ticket machines and station boards may not translate. This is where the camera translation app earns its place.

Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés, hotels and many public squares, so you can often avoid buying data for short trips.
