Bukoba
Give Bukoba one full day and one night: the lakefront, the market and the cathedral. It is a stop between Mwanza and Uganda, not a beach holiday.
Bukoba is a working lakeside town of about 145,000 people on the west shore of Lake Victoria, in northwest Tanzania. It is the main town of the Kagera region and the last useful stop before the Uganda border at Mutukula. Travellers come for the lakefront, the busy market streets and the ferry or bus link to Mwanza. There is little organised tourism, so plan your transport first and treat the rest as a walkable half-day.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Motorcycle taxis wait on most corners for short hops; agree the fare before you get on. The bus station is west of the centre and the port is about a 30-minute walk south.

- Greeting: 'Shikamoo' to elders, a handshake and small talk first; avoid: Rushing straight to business

- Pace: 'Pole pole' — slow down; avoid: Showing anger in public
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not swim in the lake: bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in the shallows along this shore.
- Foreign cards at town banks carry a fee of roughly TSh10,000–15,400 that is often not shown before the transaction; ask first.
- SIM registration with a foreign passport can fail at some shops; try another branch.
- Roads to Mwanza and Kigoma are long and slow: allow a full day, not an afternoon.
Bukoba is calm and the centre is safe by day; take motorcycle-taxi helmets seriously, avoid walking unlit shore roads at night, and do not swim in the lake because of bilharzia.
