Bukittinggi
Give Bukittinggi 2 nights: cool highland base for Sianok Canyon, Jam Gadang and one full-day Minangkabau or Maninjau loop.
Bukittinggi sits at 930 m in the Minangkabau highlands, about 90 km and 2 hours by road from Padang's airport. Days are 16–25°C, the centre is walkable, and the town works as a base for canyon views, colonial relics and day tours to Pagaruyung or Lake Maninjau. Two nights covers the town and one loop; three if you want both loops or a volcano trek.

Scams and watch-outs
- Roads to Padang and Maninjau are winding: take motion-sickness tablets for long bus legs.
- Weekend and holiday traffic on the uphill roads can add hours; travel midweek if you can.
- Horse carriages around Jam Gadang quote high prices: agree the fare before you board.
- Some animal exhibits in Bundo Kanduang Park have drawn welfare criticism; decide for yourself whether to enter.
- Marapi is an active volcano: check current status and local advice before any trek.
Bukittinggi is a calm, walkable highland town; the real risks are winding roads, wet-season landslides, weekend traffic and carriage touts around Jam Gadang — agree prices first.
