Buffalo
Buffalo, NY
Give Buffalo 2 nights: one for Canalside and the museums, one for Elmwood or Allentown food and bars. Add a third only if you day-trip to Niagara Falls.
Buffalo is New York State's second city and the hub of the Niagara Frontier, about 30 min from Niagara Falls. It is a compact, walkable city of heavy 1900s architecture, a rebuilt waterfront and strong neighborhood food strips. Two nights covers the core; most travellers pair it with the falls.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter lake-effect snow can shut roads for hours: check forecasts before driving in Nov–Mar.
- Some East Side and West Side blocks are fine by day but have little foot traffic at night: stay on main streets.
- Downtown empties after office hours; pick your evening around Allentown or Elmwood instead.
- Wings and bar food are cheap, but drinks add up: check the tab before a second round.
Buffalo is a normal US city: central districts are fine by day and evening, but use rideshares after dark and avoid walking alone on quiet East Side and West Side blocks.
