Buffalo Grove
Skip as a base unless you have family or a car here: a residential suburb 30 mi northwest of Chicago with one hotel cluster and thin transit.
Buffalo Grove is a Lake and Cook county village about 30 mi northwest of downtown Chicago, grown from an 1840s German dairy farming community and incorporated in 1958. It is a car-first residential suburb: a small downtown on Buffalo Grove Road, several golf courses, forest preserves and a Metra stop on the North Central Service. Almost nobody comes here for the village itself; you come for a suburban base, a golf round, or a stop between Chicago and the northern suburbs.

Get around
Drive. The village is spread over two counties and sidewalks are patchy, so a car is the practical default. Pace buses and the Metra North Central Service stop at Buffalo Grove and Prairie View stations, but service is commuter-oriented and thin at weekends. Rideshare works but waits can be long outside the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No car means long waits: Pace and Metra run limited off-peak service.
- Sidewalks are missing on many residential streets; walk on the shoulder with care.
- Winter ice and snow make driving and walking risky from December to March.
- Most restaurants and shops sit in strip malls along busy roads: crossing on foot is unpleasant.
A low-crime residential suburb; the real risks are winter driving, deer on the roads at dusk and unlit shoulders where sidewalks stop.
