Buckingham
Give Buckingham half a day plus one night if you want Stowe and Silverstone; skip it as a base and sleep in Milton Keynes if you have no car.
Buckingham is a small Georgian market town of about 14,000 people, 13 miles west of Milton Keynes and 58 miles north-west of London. Its own station closed in 1964, so you arrive by bus or car. The town centre is walkable in an hour; the real draws are Stowe's 250-acre landscaped gardens two miles north and Silverstone six miles north. One night is enough, and only if you have transport.

Get around
The centre and Prebend End are on foot: Old Gaol, Chantry Chapel, parish church, Market Hill and the River Great Ouse walk are all within about 15 minutes of each other. A town bus links the housing estates, the centre and Maids Moreton. Taxis are pre-booked by phone; a few wait at town-centre ranks. For Stowe and Silverstone you need a car, taxi or a booked tour.
