Buckden
Come for 1–2 nights as a walking base in upper Wharfedale, not as a sightseeing stop: without a car or a booked bed, skip it.
Buckden is a 174-person village at the head of Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, where the Wharfe meets Langstrothdale. There is no shop, no filling station and almost no public transport beyond a handful of weekday buses, so it works as a base for walkers with a car or a booked pub room, and little else. One or two nights covers the valley; the fells above it are the reason to come.

Get around
You need wheels to get anywhere. The B6160 runs north from Bolton Abbey through the village and over the moors to Wensleydale; a side lane west climbs Langstrothdale. Upper Wharfedale bus 72B links Grassington, Kettlewell and Buckden four times Monday–Saturday, turning at the Buck Inn, and Sunday Dales Bus services 874/875/876 run May–October from Wetherby, York and Leeds via Ilkley. No public transport crosses the moors beyond Buckden, so a car or a long walk is the only way out.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Moorland roads above the village can be snowbound in winter: check conditions before committing.
- Mobile signal is patchy on EE, O2 and Vodafone and absent on Three; download offline maps before you drive up.
- There is no village shop and no fuel in Buckden: stock up and fill up in Skipton or Grassington.
- Some pubs and campsites close outside the main season: confirm your bed and your dinner before arrival.
A quiet farming valley with no street crime to speak of. The real risks are weather and terrain: fells get cloud, wind and rain fast, paths are unmarked in places, and help is far away. Tell someone your route, carry a paper map and a shell, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
