Brynsiencyn
Base here 2 nights only if you have a car: the Sea Zoo and Bryn Celli Ddu are close, but buses are thin and evenings are quiet.
Brynsiencyn is a small village on the Menai Strait in south-west Anglesey, 6 miles from Menai Bridge on the A4080. It works as a low-key base for the Sea Zoo, the Bryn Celli Ddu burial chamber and the strait shore, but you need a car or patience with the bus. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Menai Bridge and Newborough.

Get around
No train station in the village; the nearest is Llanfairpwll (check) on the North Wales coast line. Bus 42 links Brynsiencyn with Bangor and the Menai Bridge area, but services are infrequent and stop early; check the timetable before you rely on it. A car is the practical way to reach the Sea Zoo, Bryn Celli Ddu and Newborough. Roads are narrow with hedges; drive on the left.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus 42 runs a limited timetable, especially evenings and Sundays: check times before booking a car-free stay.
- The Sea Zoo closes out of season (roughly early Dec to early Feb): check before travelling.
- Bryn Celli Ddu is an open field monument with no facilities or lighting; wear shoes for wet grass.
- Mobile signal can be patchy in parts of rural Anglesey (check); download maps and tickets before you set off.
- Narrow lanes with passing places: allow extra time and don't park in field gateways.
Rural and low-crime; the real risks are narrow lanes, fast tides and mud on the strait shore, and no easy taxi or bus after dark. Walk the shore at low water and keep a torch and a charged phone.
