Brynmawr
Skip as a base: 2–3 hours covers the museum and cinema. Sleep in Abergavenny or Ebbw Vale and visit on the A465 en route.
Brynmawr is a former coal town of about 5,500 people on the Heads of the Valleys road, between Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil. Its one real draw is the Market Hall Cinema, open since 1893 and the longest continually running cinema in Wales, plus a small mining museum next door. There is almost no visitor accommodation, so most people see it in a couple of hours while crossing the valleys by car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter snow and ice can close or block the A465 and side roads.
- Many town-centre businesses shut on Wednesdays, following local custom.
- Bus services thin out in the evening; check the last departure before you rely on it.
- Some pubs and takeaways in the centre have had trouble; keep to busy places after dark.
A quiet valleys town and generally safe by day. The real risks are winter ice on the A465, thin evening buses and a few town-centre pubs with late-night trouble: keep to busy, well-lit places.
