Brunswick
Braunschweig
Give Brunswick one full day on foot for the Lion, the cathedral and the old town; sleep one night, or use it as a rail stop between Hanover and Berlin.
Brunswick (Braunschweig) is a Lower Saxony city of about 250,000 people, an ICE rail stop between Hanover and Berlin, and the historic seat of Henry the Lion. The centre was almost entirely destroyed in World War II, so the draw is a compact core of monuments, museums and a car-free shopping zone rather than a preserved old town. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a base for the Harz, Wolfsburg and the surrounding Brunswick Land.

Get around
The centre is walkable and the shopping district is car-free. Trams and buses run from the Hauptbahnhof to the centre; a single city trip is €3.50, a short trip (up to 3 stops) €1.90, and a one-person day ticket €7.00 (Jan 2026). Buy from the driver, at DB machines or in the FAIRTIQ or Meine BSVG app. Taxis are expensive; the centre is not next to the main station, so plan a tram or bus for arrival.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Dankwarderode Castle is closed until further notice: check the official site before you plan around it.
- Bruchstraße, the old timber-framed lane, is closed to the public and off-limits to minors; you can only look from the gates.
- Brunswick Hauptbahnhof sits outside the centre; the surrounding area has little of interest.
- A2 traffic jams are common, especially on Fridays; allow extra time if driving.
Brunswick is a calm, ordinary German city; the main risks are pickpockets in the pedestrian zone and around the Hauptbahnhof at night, plus icy pavements in winter. Use 112 for fire and ambulance and 110 for police.
