Bronckhorst is a rural Achterhoek municipality, not a town: it was formed in 2005 from Hengelo, Hummelo en Keppel, Steenderen, Vorden and Zelhem, and its name comes from Bronkhorst, the smallest city in the Netherlands, with under 100 houses on about ten streets. Sights are spread across villages 5–15 km apart, so a car or a bike decides whether the day works. Come for castles, river polders and quiet lanes, not for a compact old town.

Vorden has the only rail station in the municipality, on the Zutphen–Winterswijk line.
