Brisbane public transport: tickets, passes and apps

For a visitor staying a few days, the simplest answer is to use the contactless card or phone already in your pocket. Brisbane's network accepts tap-on and tap-off with Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards and with phone wallets, and the fare charged is the same as a go card. You skip the deposit, the top-up and the refund queue at the end of the trip.

Buy a go card only if you have no contactless card, want a physical card for a longer stay, or are travelling with children who need their own card. Paper single tickets exist but cost more per trip and are not worth it for more than one journey.

If you are in Brisbane for a week or more and will ride daily, check whether a weekly or monthly product beats the daily cap for your pattern. For most short visits the cap does the work on its own.

Fares are set by zone and by whether you travel in peak or off-peak. As a rough guide, a short inner-city trip sits at the bottom of the band and a cross-city or airport-line trip at the top. Off-peak travel is cheaper, and the daily cap means a heavy sightseeing day stops costing more once you reach it.

All figures below are 2026 estimates and should be confirmed against TransLink before you rely on them. Concessions exist for students, seniors and children, but visitor eligibility varies — ask at a staffed station if it matters to your budget.

Tap on at the reader as you enter the station, tram or bus, and tap off as you leave. If you forget to tap off, you are charged a default fare that is usually higher than the trip should have cost, so make it a habit. On buses, tap on at the front and tap off at the exit doors.

Contactless works on trains, buses and ferries across the TransLink network. If you use a phone wallet, keep the same device for tap-on and tap-off; mixing a physical card and a phone can confuse the system and trigger a default fare. Each traveller needs their own card or device — you cannot tap one card for two people.

For planning, use the TransLink journey planner to check timetables and connections, and a live-times app on the day. Buy or top up a go card at station machines and selected retailers if you go that route.

Brisbane's fares are zoned rather than flat. Zone 1 covers the inner city and the closest suburbs, and the zones step outward from there. The airport line and longer suburban trips cross more zones, which is why they cost more than a CBD hop.

For a typical visitor staying in or near the centre, most trips sit in the lowest zone and the fare is small. If you are based further out, or plan day trips to the coast, work out which zones you cross before deciding whether a weekly product is worth it. Ferries on the river are part of the same network and are a cheap way to see the city from the water.

Brisbane Airport is served by the Airtrain, which runs to the CBD in about 20 minutes and continues toward the Gold Coast. You can tap on with a contactless card or use a go card. The catch is the station access fee, which is added on top of the normal fare and makes the airport trip noticeably more expensive than a comparable suburban journey.

Alternatives: a taxi or rideshare from the airport to the CBD costs more than the train but is door to door, and the bus network reaches some airport-area stops. If you are heading straight to the Gold Coast, the train continues south and can be simpler than changing in the city.

If you arrive late, check the last train time before you book a flight, and have a taxi or rideshare as a fallback.

Off-peak travel is cheaper and quieter, and the daily cap rewards a full day of sightseeing. River ferries are part of the same ticketing system and are one of the best-value ways to move around the centre.

Fines apply for travelling without a valid tap-on, so do not board without touching on. Keep your card or phone separate from other contactless cards in your wallet to avoid the reader picking up the wrong one. If you are staying a while and using the train daily, compare a weekly product with the cap before committing.
