Romantic things to do in Brighton

Brighton works for couples because the romantic bits sit within a 30-minute walk of each other: the seafront, the pier, the Lanes and the Pavilion. You do not need a car or a plan longer than an afternoon.

The three that earn their place first: the British Airways i360 for a slow rise over the seafront at dusk, the Royal Pavilion for interiors that look nothing like the rest of England, and a table in the Lanes or North Laine for the evening. Everything else below is a variation on those.

Almost everything romantic in Brighton sits in a line along the coast and just inland. From Brighton station, walk downhill to the seafront (about 15 minutes), then west along the promenade past the pier, the i360 and on to Hove. The Royal Pavilion and the Lanes are between the station and the sea.

Brighton is a walking city. Trains from London Victoria and London Bridge take roughly an hour to an hour and a half, so a couple can arrive for lunch and be back in London the same night. If you are staying over, book a seafront or Lanes hotel early for summer weekends; prices rise sharply in July and August.

For a romantic evening, the sequence that works: arrive mid-afternoon, walk the Lanes, take the i360 at dusk, then eat. Reserve the restaurant. On Friday and Saturday nights the popular Lanes places fill by 19:00.

If it rains, switch to the Pavilion, the museum and the i360 pod, all of which are indoors or enclosed. The pier is exposed and miserable in wind and rain.

May to September is the reliable window: long evenings, outdoor bars and the pier at its liveliest. June and early July give the latest sunsets. August is the busiest and most expensive, and the Brighton Pride weekend in early August fills the city.

Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper, and the light on the seafront is often better for photos. Winter is cold and windy, but the Pavilion and the Lanes are still open and hotel prices drop. Avoid the coldest, wettest weeks if your plan depends on being outside.

From London, direct trains run from Victoria and London Bridge to Brighton in about an hour to an hour and a half. Advance tickets are much cheaper than walk-up fares. Brighton station is a 15-minute downhill walk from the seafront; buses and taxis meet the trains.

By car, the A23/M23 runs from London to Brighton; parking near the seafront is limited and expensive, so most couples arrive by train. Gatwick Airport is about 30–40 minutes away by train, which makes Brighton an easy first or last stop on a UK trip.
