Bright
Give Bright 2 nights with a car: one full day for the river, rail trail and gorge, one for a Mount Buffalo or alpine drive. Without a car, stay 1 night and walk the town.
Bright is a small High Country town on the Ovens River, about 3.5 hours by road from Melbourne and 1.5 hours from Albury-Wodonga. It works as a 2-night base for cycling, river swimming, autumn colour and drives into the Alpine National Park. Almost everyone arrives by car; V/Line buses run from Wangaratta and connect with trains at Seymour.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No train: the rail line ends at Wangaratta and V/Line buses run about three times daily on weekdays, once a day at weekends.
- Autumn weekends and school holidays fill the town; book beds and dinner ahead.
- River water is cold even in summer, and the Ovens can rise fast after rain.
- Alpine roads can close for snow or fallen trees in winter: check conditions before driving to Mount Hotham or Falls Creek.
Bright is a small, low-crime country town and safe for tourists. The real risks are cold river water, wildlife on the roads at dusk, and alpine weather that changes fast.
