Bridgetown
Bridgetown is a morning-and-late-afternoon city: do Broad Street, Cheapside and the Garrison before the midday sun, swim at Carlisle Bay in the afternoon, and take a taxi with a fare agreed before you get in.
Bridgetown is compact and flat, with the historic centre on a harbour inlet and the beaches a short ride south. The trips that go wrong are the ones that walk between clusters at noon, or that arrive on a Sunday or public holiday when most shops and the market are shut. Four clusters cover a first visit; the west coast and the east coast are trips from a kept bed, and hurricane season decides what is open.

- Dress: Beachwear stays on the beach; cover up for Broad Street, churches and restaurants.
- Camouflage: Camouflage-pattern clothing is illegal for civilians, including children — do not pack or wear it.
- Greetings: A greeting before a request is expected, in shops, rum shops and even when asking directions — walking straight into a question can read as rude.
- Sunday: Many shops, the market and some restaurants close or run reduced hours; some locals attend church, and quiet is appreciated near church buildings on Sunday mornings.
- Tipping: Check whether a 10% service charge is already on the bill before adding more; round up for taxis and casual service.
- Photos: Ask before photographing market vendors and worshippers.
