Briarcliff Manor
One night is enough: walk the Pleasantville Road downtown, hike Pocantico or the aqueduct trail, and sleep in Tarrytown or Ossining for more choice.
Briarcliff Manor is a small Westchester village about 50 km north of New York City, with a compact downtown of shops and restaurants and more trees than people. It is a half-day to one-day stop on a Hudson Valley run, not a base: most travellers sleep in Tarrytown, Ossining or White Plains and come for the trails and the architecture.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: outside downtown most roads have no sidewalks, and Bee-Line routes 14, 15 and 19 run infrequently. Downtown parking is free. Metro-North Hudson Line trains from Scarborough or Ossining reach Grand Central in about 50 min express, about 1 h local; buy tickets before boarding to avoid the on-board surcharge.
