Brescia is a working Lombard city of about 196,000 people, 100 km east of Milan, with two UNESCO-listed cores: the Roman forum and the Longobard monastery of Santa Giulia. Sights sit in a compact centre, the metro is one line, and the lakes and Franciacorta wine hills start 20–30 km out. Most travellers see the city in a day and use it as a rail stop between Milan, Verona and Lake Garda.
