Brecon is a small market town of about 8,250 people inside Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, with a cathedral, a Roman fort site and the Usk and Honddu rivers running through it. Almost nobody comes for the town alone: it is the practical base for Pen y Fan, the highest point in southern Britain, and for walks, waterfalls and cycling in the park. Two nights covers a summit day plus the town; three nights lets you add a waterfall or a second ridge without rushing. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses reach the surrounding villages and some trailheads, but services are thin on Sundays and in winter; a car makes the park far easier. Taxis are limited, so book ahead for early summit starts.
