Brazzaville
Brazzaville is a two-day river-capital: do the Corniche and the Mémorial in the morning, the basilica and Poto-Poto art quarter after, use hotel-arranged taxis for everything, and carry your passport.
Brazzaville is calm compared with its neighbour Kinshasa across the river, but it is a city of long straight avenues, heat and police checkpoints. Trips go wrong on the edges: an airport taxi with no fixed fare, a camera pointed at a government building or the river bridge, and a wet-season downpour on the way to dinner. Four clusters cover the centre; the coast and the forest parks are flights away. Some governments advise against travel to parts of the Pool region: read your own advice first.

- Greetings: A handshake and a few words of French (or Lingala) go a long way; greet before asking for anything.
- Photos: Always ask before photographing people; never photograph government buildings, security forces, bridges, the port or the airport.
- Dress: Modest, neat dress is respected, especially at the basilica and in government areas; Sunday best is common on Sundays.
- Paperwork: Carry ID at all times and stay calm and polite at checkpoints.
- Paying: Bargain with a smile in markets; never at a maquis with a posted price.

Scams and watch-outs
- Unofficial 'guides' at the airport who grab bags before you reach the hotel car: wait for your named driver only.
- Street money-changers offering better rates than banks: count is short or notes are fake — change at a bank or hotel desk.
- Officials or people in uniform demanding on-the-spot fines away from a marked checkpoint: ask for a written receipt and the officer's name, or say you will settle it at the station.
- A 'friend' who appears at the market to help you bargain then takes a cut from the seller: shop with your hotel-arranged guide instead.
