Go for 1–2 nights as a quiet mountain base above Lake Prespa: hike to St. Petka and the ridge trail, then move on by car.
Brajčino is a stone village of about 160 people at roughly 1,000 m on the eastern slope above Lake Prespa, in Western North Macedonia. It is a walking base, not a sightseeing city: five churches, one monastery, old village houses and a trail up toward Mt. Pelister. A car makes the surrounding Prespa villages, beaches and monasteries reachable; without one you are limited to the Bitola bus and your own feet.

Get around
On foot. The village is small and many paths are too narrow for cars, so park and walk. A car is only useful for leaving the village — Prespa villages, beaches, Slivnica Monastery and Resen. The Bitola bus stops in the village about twice a day; check times locally.

- Greeting: Handshake and eye contact; three cheek kisses between friends; avoid: Skipping greetings in shops and guesthouses
- Hospitality: Accept coffee, sweets or rakija; bring a small gift if invited home; avoid: Refusing everything — take a little
- Religion: Cover up in churches and mosques; remove shoes in mosques; avoid: Photos during services
- Conversation: Ask about food, wine, family and football; avoid: Opinions on Greece, Bulgaria, Alexander the Great or the name
- Paying: Let the host insist, then offer to pay next time; avoid: Splitting small bills to the denar
Scams and watch-outs
- Bears live in the surrounding mountains and are protected; they rarely come into the village, but keep food stored and do not hike alone at dusk.
- Roads in and out are mountain roads; winter snow and ice can close them — check before driving.
- Few places take cards; carry denar cash.
- The St. Bogorodica cave church path is steep and takes several hours: go with someone who knows it, start early, carry water.
Very low crime. The real risks are mountain terrain, bears in the hills, winter road conditions and cash-only businesses: tell someone your route and carry denar.
