Give Brahmapur one night as a rail stop between Kolkata and Chennai, or two if you want Taratarini and Gopalpur beach; the city itself is a market town, not a sight.
Brahmapur (also spelled Berhampur) is Odisha's third-largest city and a stop on the East Coast Railway main line, 2 h 30 min from Bhubaneswar and about 3 h 30 min from Visakhapatnam. It is a silk and mango trading town with few sights of its own; the reasons to get off the train are the Tara Tarini hill temple 25 km north, Gopalpur-on-Sea about 10 km south, and Taptapani's hot springs 56 km inland. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a base for the coast between Chilika Lake and the Andhra border.
