Bragança

Give Bragança one night, two if you day-trip Castro de Avelãs: the walled Cidadela is a half-day, the town a half-day, and buses out are slow.

Bragança is one of Portugal's oldest cities, up in Trás-os-Montes near the Spanish border, and its draw is compact: a walled Cidadela with a 34 m keep, a Romanesque council house, and a museum of Trás-os-Montes art. There has been no train since 1991, so you arrive by bus or by small plane. Most travellers see it in a night, or use it as a stop between Chaves and Miranda do Douro.

Get around

The centre is walkable; the climb to the Cidadela is short but steep, and taxis will take you up. A local bus system covers the town. For Castro de Avelãs and Montezinho you need a car, a taxi or a tour.

  • Meals: Relax — service is unhurried; avoid: Asking for Spanish-style tapas late at night in small towns

Scams and watch-outs

  • No train service since 1991: plan on bus (Rede Expressos, Rodonorte) or the small Baçal airfield.
  • The Spain bus to Zamora runs about twice a week and has no online booking: phone the bus station.
  • Winter here is genuinely cold for Portugal; summer afternoons are hot and shade is scarce on the Cidadela.
  • Museum and castle hours close for lunch and on Mondays: check before you climb.

A small, calm inland city; the real risks are the cold in winter, the steep cobbles up to the Cidadela, and long empty roads if you drive at night.
