Bowral
Give Bowral one full day on foot plus one night: gardens, Bradman museum and Bong Bong Street. Two nights if you have a car for wineries.
Bowral is the main town of the Southern Highlands, about 80 minutes by car or just under 2 hours by train from Sydney. The compact centre is walkable in an afternoon; the wineries, manor gardens and villages around it need a car. Most visitors come for a weekend or a day trip, and Tulip Time in late September to early October is the busiest window of the year.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains on the Southern Highlands line are infrequent, and late-night services stop until the next morning: check the timetable before a night out.
- Regional trains from Sydney need booking in advance.
- Winter nights drop near freezing; summer days can pass 30 °C.
- Cellar-door tastings and some restaurants need a booking on weekends.
Bowral is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are wildlife and unlit roads after dark if you drive, cold winter nights, and bushfire or flood closures in the surrounding national parks: check alerts before a walk.
