Bowman
Bowman, North Dakota
One night, June–August only: base here for the guided fossil digs, then push on to the Badlands or Medora. Outside summer, skip.
Bowman is a small prairie town in the North Dakota Badlands, about 60 miles south of I-94 on US 85. Its one draw is the summer palaeontology digs, which need a reservation. Everything else — a motel bed, a steak, a beer — is a stop on the road between the Black Hills and the Badlands.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The fossil digs run June–August only and require a reservation — call ahead, no walk-ups.
- Distances are long and cell coverage thins out on the back roads; carry water and a paper map.
- Winter brings snow, ice and wind; some seasonal businesses close outside summer.
- Alcohol rules vary by county in this part of North Dakota — check before buying to take away.
A quiet, low-crime prairie town; the real risks are long empty drives, summer heat, winter ice and thin cell coverage. Tell someone your route before heading onto the back roads.
