Bowen
Give Bowen 2 nights if you want beaches without the Airlie crowds; 1 night is enough as a Bruce Highway stop between Townsville and Mackay.
Bowen sits on a peninsula north of the Whitsundays, with eight beaches on three sides of town and a mango-and-tomato farming economy behind it. It is a working country town, not a resort: no island ferries, no big nightlife, but Horseshoe Bay and Queens Beach are swimmable in the cooler months and the Bruce Highway puts Townsville about 2 hours north and Mackay about 2 hours south. Most travellers pass through on the Brisbane–Cairns run; the ones who stop come for a quiet beach base and the Big Mango.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette

- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in warmer months; swim in netted areas or wear a stinger suit from about November to May.
- Beaches are unpatrolled outside peak periods; check for flags and lifeguard times before swimming.
- The Bruce Highway carries road trains and heavy traffic; take care pulling out of highway-side parks.
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; plan beach time for early morning.
- Bowen is a small town: fuel, supermarkets and pharmacies close early, and some services are limited on Sundays.
Bowen is a small, low-crime country town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are marine stingers in the warmer months, unpatrolled surf, highway traffic and summer heat.
