Bouzigues
Go for one night or a long lunch: the oyster waterfront is the whole point, and it empties by 15:00. Base elsewhere and day-trip unless you want the quiet.
Bouzigues is a working shellfish port on the Étang de Thau, about 1,700 residents, with a medieval core and a seafront of oyster restaurants. It calls itself the oyster capital of France. There is very little accommodation, so most visitors come for lunch and leave; one night is enough to see it properly.

Get around
Everything in the centre is a short walk; the seafront to the old town is about 10 minutes. The Voie Verte cycle path runs along the former railway to Mèze and Balaruc-les-Bains, 12 km (7.5 mi) each way. Hérault Transport buses reach Mèze, Montpellier and local villages, but not many direct destinations, so a car or bike helps for the wider Thau basin.Everything in the centre is a short walk; the seafront to the old town is about 10 minutes. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bonjour madame/monsieur' on entering any shop, bus or office; avoid: Asking a question before saying bonjour — it is read as rude
- Cheek kisses (la bise): Follow the other person's lead; one to four kisses depending on region; avoid: Initiating la bise with strangers or in business
- Addressing people: Use 'vous' and titles until invited otherwise; avoid: First names and 'tu' with older people or staff
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated in restaurants; call the waiter 'monsieur' or 'madame'; avoid: 'Garçon', snapping fingers, asking for the bill before you are finished
- Conversation: Debate is a pleasure; food, politics and philosophy are fair game; avoid: Asking about salary or religion; loud voices on trains
- Dinner at a home: Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums), chocolates or a good bottle; arrive 10–15 minutes late; avoid: Cutting the tip off a cheese wedge or asking for ketchup
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders in churches; avoid: Beachwear in town centres
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking near the harbour fills fast before midday; arrive early or park on the campervan area on chemin de la Catonnière, about 15 minutes' walk out.
- The bus stop La Clavade is about 1 km outside town, awkward with luggage or limited mobility.
- No lifeguards on either beach; swim between the floats at Plage de la Pyramide.
- Some narrow old-town streets carry fast local traffic.
A small, low-crime town; the real risks are midday parking, fast cars in the old lanes, and swimming without lifeguards. Keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
