How to get to Botswana: airports, flights and border crossings

Botswana has three airports that matter to visitors. Maun (MUB) is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and Moremi, and the busiest light-aircraft base in the country. Kasane (BBK) sits beside Chobe National Park and the Chobe riverfront, and is the closest airport to Victoria Falls. Gaborone (GBE) serves the capital and the South African border region, not the safari circuit.

Almost all long-haul travellers connect through Johannesburg (JNB). From there, flights to Maun and Kasane take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Gaborone is about 1 hour from Johannesburg. Regional links also exist from Cape Town, Windhoek and Harare, and some seasonal or charter services reach Maun and Kasane from other southern African cities — schedules change, so confirm at booking.

If you are booking a safari package, the camp or operator usually arranges the light-aircraft leg from Maun or Kasane. Baggage is limited on these small planes: soft bags only, commonly 20 kg total including hand luggage, and sometimes less. Confirm the limit with your operator before you pack.

There are no nonstop flights from North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand to Botswana. Everyone connects, most often in Johannesburg, sometimes in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai depending on the airline. Add the connection and a possible overnight to the times below.

These are total travel times including one connection, and they move with schedules and layovers. Treat them as planning bands, not promises.

Botswana is landlocked, so there is no sea arrival. Land borders connect it to South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The main crossings are at Kazungula (Zambia and Zimbabwe, near Kasane), Ramokgwebana and Tlokweng (South Africa), and Buitepos and Mohembo (Namibia). Border posts keep set hours, often shorter than you expect, and some close at night — check the current hours before you travel.

The Kazungula crossing uses a bridge over the Zambezi; the old pontoon is gone. At busy times, especially holidays, expect queues. Have your passport, onward plans and any visa paperwork ready, and check whether your nationality needs a visa or can get one on arrival.

Driving in from South Africa or Namibia is common, but long distances and animals on the road make night driving a bad idea. If you cross with a rental car, confirm the company allows it and that you have the correct papers.

Most visitors need a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages. Visa rules depend on your passport: many Western nationalities can enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival, but this changes, so verify with an official Botswana source or your nearest embassy before booking. Carry proof of onward travel and accommodation; border officers may ask.

Health rules can apply too. Some travellers are asked for a yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission — check current requirements. Malaria is present in the north, including the Okavango and Chobe, so discuss prevention with a travel clinic.

On the ground, English is the official language and is used across tourism, so getting around is straightforward. The currency is the Botswana pula (BWP), about 13–14 per US$. Safari camps often price in US dollars. Mobile coverage is good in towns and weaker in the parks; an eSIM or local SIM helps for maps and bookings.

Match your airport to your itinerary. If your trip starts in the Delta, fly to Maun. If it starts at Chobe or you want Victoria Falls first, fly to Kasane. Many travellers fly into one and out of the other, which avoids backtracking; ask your operator whether an open-jaw ticket works for the light-aircraft legs.

Build in a buffer night in Maun or Kasane before a light-aircraft transfer. Delayed international flights are common, and missing a charter can cost a day. A night in town also lets you buy anything you forgot and adjust to the time zone.

Book safari camps and internal flights early for the peak season from June to October, when the Delta and Chobe are busiest. For the rest of the year, schedules are thinner but availability is easier. Travel insurance that covers light aircraft and safari activities is worth arranging before you fly.
