Boten
ບໍ່ເຕັນ
Skip Boten unless you need to cross the China–Laos border by train or road: it's a transit town with little to see, and one hour is enough to clear immigration.
Boten is a rough border town at the northern tip of Laos, built around the Lao–China Railway station and the road crossing to Mohan. Most travellers pass through in under two hours — long enough to clear immigration, grab a snack and catch the next train or bus. There are no sights, no temples and no reason to stay overnight unless your connection forces it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Nop (palms together) and 'sabaidee'; avoid: Loud greetings and hugs
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off; avoid: Pointing feet at images; women touching monks
- Keeping calm: Stay relaxed; 'bor pen nyang'; avoid: Anger in public
- Baci ceremony: Keep the white strings on your wrist for three days; avoid: Cutting them off
- Head and feet: Keep feet down; avoid: Touching heads
Scams and watch-outs
- Prices are quoted in yuan first; kip rates vary between vendors.
- Immigration at Boten can take 30+ minutes; the Chinese side at Mohan can add another 1–2 hours with extra questioning for non-citizens.
- International trains stop for 90 minutes for customs — you must take all your luggage off the train.
- The town has no real sights; plan your arrival and departure to avoid an unplanned night.
Boten is safe for transit; the main risks are heat, long immigration queues and the lack of English signage. Keep your passport and visa ready, and carry small yuan notes for taxis and golf carts.
