Boring
Boring, Oregon
Skip as a base: no public transport, no hotels in town. Use it as a 2–3 h stop off US-26 between Portland and Mount Hood, or sleep in Gresham or Sandy.
Boring is an unincorporated community of about 1,900 people in the Willamette Valley, 30–40 min by car from Portland on US-26 and Highway 212. It was a rail junction from 1903 and a timber town for much of the 20th century. Today it is a name joke — twinned with Dull, Scotland and Bland Shire, Australia — plus a handful of pubs, a golf course and the western end of the Springwater Corridor Trail. There is no public transport and no lodging in town, so you visit for a few hours and sleep elsewhere.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport and no lodging in town: without a car you cannot get in or out.
- US-26 is a fast highway with few crossings; drive, do not walk between stops.
- Some businesses are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays — check before you drive out.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the trail east of Boring.
Low-crime small town; the real risks are the highway (US-26 traffic, no footpaths between stops), winter ice on the trail and long waits for a rideshare after the pubs close.
