Bombala
Stop one night if you are driving the Monaro Highway between Canberra and the coast; coaches reach the town three times a week, but there is no local transport once you arrive.
Bombala is a small grazing and timber town on the Monaro Highway, about 1,400 people, best known for the platypus reserve 3 km south of the centre and for an old railway station you can walk on. It works as a break on the inland route between Canberra and the Victorian coast, not as a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport or taxi: coaches stop at the Bombala Coach Stop on Forbes Street, but you need a car to reach anything outside the town centre.
- Platypus are seen at dawn or dusk only, and not on demand.
- Winter nights can drop below freezing; check road conditions before crossing the Monaro.
Very low crime; the real risks are wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, winter ice, and long gaps between fuel stops.
