Give Bolzano 2 nights: one full day for Ötzi and the old town, one for Runkelstein or a cable car up to Ritten. Skip it as a day trip from Verona.
Bolzano is South Tyrol's bilingual capital, an Italian city with an Austrian accent, 30 min from the Brenner Pass on the Verona–Innsbruck line. It is small enough to walk in a day, but the Iceman museum, two castles and three cable cars into the mountains make two nights the honest minimum. It is one of Italy's most expensive cities per head.

- Christmas market weeks and ski-season weekends jam the A22 and city car parks; arrive by train.
- Old-town car access is restricted; leave the car at a signed garage such as Centro BZ Mitte.
Very safe for a city of its size; the real risks are summer heat, fast cyclists on the river paths and pickpockets only in the Christmas market crush. Mountain weather changes fast above 1,500 m.
