Bolivia is one of the cheapest countries in South America for a visitor, and the gap between tiers is wide. The single biggest saving is food: an almuerzo (set lunch of soup, a main and a drink) costs Bs 20–40 at a market or neighbourhood restaurant, while a tourist-menu dinner in La Paz costs more. Breakfast of a salteña and coffee is Bs 8–15.
Transport is cheap if you avoid flights. City buses and shared taxis cost a few bolivianos, and the La Paz cable car network is about Bs 3 a ride — check. Long-distance buses are the budget backbone between La Paz, Oruro, Sucre and Uyuni; fares and overnight departures vary by route, so check at the terminal. Domestic flights cost far more and are worth it mainly for the La Paz–Uyuni leg when time is short.
Accommodation is where mid-range budgets stretch. Dorms run Bs 50–100 and private rooms in hostals and boutique hotels Bs 200–450 (2026 estimates). Outside La Paz and Santa Cruz, pay in cash — cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants only.
Sights add up quietly. The Uyuni salt-flat tour is the one item most travellers cannot avoid, at about Bs 1,200–2,500 for a shared 3-day trip plus roughly Bs 150 for the Eduardo Avaroa reserve entry — check. The Death Road bike tour runs Bs 600–1,000.

Tips
Eat where locals eat, at local hours. Almuerzo is served roughly 12:00–14:00 and is the cheapest full meal of the day; the same kitchen charges more after dark. Markets in La Paz, Sucre and Cochabamba are the best value.
Book buses at the terminal rather than through a hotel desk. Buy the Uyuni tour in Uyuni, not in La Paz, and compare two or three agencies on the same street — prices for similar itineraries vary.
Withdraw cash in La Paz, Sucre or Santa Cruz before heading to Uyuni, Copacabana or the salt flats, and keep clean US dollar notes as backup. Since the boliviano began floating in June 2026 the street rate has converged with the bank rate, so there is little reason to change money informally — check today's rate before you commit.
Altitude is a budget issue too: a day lost to soroche costs a night's bed and a meal. Take the first days slowly in La Paz and drink water rather than buying oxygen or coca supplements you may not need.
Travel insurance is not optional on the salt flats or Death Road; a bike crash or a broken ankle is the one event that can turn a cheap trip expensive.
