Bodrum

Give Bodrum 3 nights: castle and marina on day one, a boat or beach day two, peninsula day three. Skip it in Jul–Aug if you hate crowds and 35°C.

Bodrum is a mass-market Aegean resort built around a Knights Hospitaller castle and a working marina, on a peninsula with a dozen beach villages. It is busy, competitive on price and easy to reach by air, ferry from Kos or bus from Izmir. Three nights covers the town and one or two peninsula days; a week is a beach holiday.

Get around

Dolmuş minibuses fan out from the downtown city bus station and the Yeni Otogar; most routes run roughly 07:00–22:00 and cost a few lira. The centre is walkable. Taxis are metered but agree the fare before long runs. Car hire helps for the far peninsula, but parking in the centre is tight in summer.

Bodrum is a busy resort and generally safe by day; the real risks are summer heat, sea currents on windy days, and bars or beach clubs with no posted prices. Ask the total before you sit, keep an eye on your bag in Gümbet at night, and swim only where others are swimming.
