Boca Grande
Go for 1–2 nights if you want a slow, car-light island; skip if you need nightlife, cheap beds or a beach with waves.
Boca Grande is a small town on Gasparilla Island, reached by one causeway from the mainland near Placida. The draw is a walkable downtown of a few blocks, a state park with two lighthouses, and a fishing-and-golf pace that suits a short stay. Beds are limited and priced high in season, so book early or treat it as a day trip from Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda.

Get around
A car is the easy option: one road crosses the causeway and runs south as Gasparilla Rd. Downtown is compact enough to walk, and golf carts and bikes are common on the island. There is no train or airport on the island; taxis and rideshare are thin, so arrange transfers ahead.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and evacuation routes before you commit.
- Summer heat and afternoon storms: carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
- Beds are scarce and expensive in winter; walk-in rooms are not reliable.
- Some island roads and paths are shared with golf carts and bikes — keep right and watch driveways.
- Red tide and algae blooms occur some years on this coast; check local advisories if you have breathing issues.
Low crime and a quiet island feel; the real risks are heat, storms, thin medical services on the island and driving the causeway at night with wildlife and carts about.
