Blountstown
Skip as a base: a small Calhoun County seat with one motel and two sights. Stop 2–3 hours off I-10, or sleep in Marianna or Tallahassee.
Blountstown is a town of about 2,500 people on the Apalachicola River in West Florida, 30 minutes south of I-10 exit 152 on FL-69. Hurricane Michael hit it hard in 2018. There is one small motel, a pioneer village museum and a state park across the river in Bristol — which runs on Eastern Time while Blountstown runs on Central Time. Come for a half-day, not a holiday.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Blountstown is on Central Time; Bristol, just across the river, is on Eastern Time. Check which clock your booking and opening hours use.
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms: start outdoor sights before noon.
- The area still shows Hurricane Michael damage from 2018; some rural roads and businesses are rougher than the map suggests.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the river bluffs and in Torreya State Park.
Low street-crime risk in a town this size. The real hazards are summer heat, storms, deer and logging trucks on rural roads, and long gaps between fuel stops — fill up in Blountstown or Bristol.
