Blayney
Stop in Blayney for half a day on the Bathurst–Cowra drive, or one night if you arrive by train; there is no reason to build a trip around it.
Blayney is a farming town of about 3,400 people on the Mid-Western Highway in the Central West of New South Wales, 38 km southwest of Bathurst and 70 km northeast of Cowra. It has a train station on the daily Dubbo XPT and the weekly Broken Hill XPL, a short river boardwalk, a town lookout and a handful of pubs and motels. Treat it as a break in a driving day or a cheap rail stop, not a destination in itself.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Without a car you are limited to the main street, the boardwalk and the station; the lookout is a short uphill walk. For anything beyond town — Millthorpe, Carcoar, Bathurst — you need a car or a booked coach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are booked in advance only; there is no turn-up-and-go regional service.
- The Dubbo XPT runs once daily each way and the Broken Hill XPL once weekly — miss it and you are stuck overnight.
- Fuel and food options thin out fast after about 8pm; the pub is the main late option.
- Summer days push past 35 °C and winter nights drop below 0 °C; the highway can be foggy at dawn.
A quiet country town and generally safe to walk by day or early evening. The real risks are highway driving at dusk when kangaroos move, summer heat on the boardwalk, and having no plan B if you miss the one daily train.
