Blair Atholl
One night is enough: Blair Castle and the Falls of Bruar, then move on. Without a car, treat it as a stop on the Perth–Inverness line, not a base.
Blair Atholl is a village of about 500 people in Perth and Kinross, inside Cairngorms National Park, on the Perth–Inverness line and the old A9 route through the Highlands. It exists for travellers because of one thing: Blair Castle, seat of Clan Murray and home of the Atholl Highlanders. Add the Falls of Bruar and a short walk up Glen Tilt and you have a full day. Most people sleep one night, or visit from Pitlochry 15 minutes down the road.

Get around
The village is small and walkable; walk times between the station, village centre and castle gates are short but check on the ground. You need wheels or a bus for the Falls of Bruar and House of Bruar, 3 miles north on the A9. Elizabeth Yule bus 87 runs from Pitlochry every couple of hours Mon–Sat, stopping by the castle and at the Atholl Arms. Taxis come from Pitlochry.

Scams and watch-outs
- The castle is closed November to March: check dates before you book a winter night.
- Blair Atholl station has no ticket machines, no toilets and no café; buy before you travel or pay on board where allowed.
- The lane up Glen Tilt is paved but single-track with no passing places: park at the St Bride's turn-off and walk.
- The Caledonian Highland Sleeper does not run on Saturday nights; the southbound pick-up is around 10:30PM.
- Midges are bad near water on still evenings in July and August.
Very safe. The real risks are single-track roads, weather that turns on the hills, and arriving after the last bus with no taxi booked.
