Blaenavon
Blaenafon
Go for one full day, not a base: Big Pit underground tour plus the ironworks fills a day; sleep in Abergavenny or Newport instead.
Blaenavon is a small former iron and coal town in Torfaen, South Wales, and the centre of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two free museums carry the visit: Big Pit National Coal Museum, where retired miners lead an underground tour, and Blaenavon Ironworks. The town itself is compact and walkable, but the two sites sit about 1.5 km apart on a hill, and public transport in is thin. Most travellers see it as a half-day to full-day stop from Abergavenny, Newport or the Brecon Beacons, not an overnight base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Big Pit underground tours are first-come and can sell out on school holidays; arrive early.
- The underground tour involves a helmet, lamp and a lift descent; not suitable for everyone, and bags are left in lockers.
- Bus services to Blaenavon are limited, especially on Sundays; check times before you commit.
- Weather on the surrounding moorland changes fast; bring a waterproof even in summer.
Blaenavon is a quiet town and feels safe by day; the real issues are uneven ground at the heritage sites, fast-changing moorland weather and thin bus services after dark.
